An anal fissure is a tear, cut or ulcer located in the anal canal and anus. This is usually brought by constipation and other bowel syndromes. It typically occurs in adults but may also affect young infants.

It increases blood flow towards the area and relaxes muscle spasms. Aside from the aforementioned, blood pressure medications can also be used to relax the muscles of the anal sphincter. Blood pressure medications like oral nifedipine and dilitiazem must be taken orally or applied externally for better results.

Those suffering chronic anal fissure may opt to have a surgery called lateral internal sphinctetectomy (LIS) performed on them by a licensed surgeon. This operation involves the cutting of a portion of the muscles of the anal sphincter to promote healing and reduce the pain and spasms.

Milder cases of anal fissures usually go away on their own after several weeks. Some people opt to home remedies rather than seek medical treatment. There are many home remedies to ease the symptoms and cure this disease. However, not all are effective. It is also recommended to use baby wipes instead of toilet paper. Using toilet paper to clean yourself could irritate the skin. Stay away from cleansing agents with strong chemicals.
