Are rosemary honey, Olive Oil, Beeswax and baking soda any good for anal fissures?

Anal fissures are tears, open sores and cracks found in the anal canal and anus which cause a burning or itching sensation during bowel movement. It is commonly caused by constipation. However, it can also be caused by other reasons like diarrhea, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, sexually transmitted disease, strain during childbirth, cancer and tight anal sphincter muscles.

An anal fissure can either be acute or chronic. But generally, individuals suffering from it usually experience the following symptoms:

  1. Rectal Bleeding;
  2. Malodorous discharge;
  3. Itching
  4. Sharp pain in the anal and rectal area
  5. Burning sensation

These symptoms worsen during bowel movements but subside after. The pain can also affect one’s urination.

Treatment and other remedies for anal fissures

Anal fissures usually heal within a few weeks. However, it is still advisable to seek the help of a doctor in the event you experience any of the aforementioned symptoms. The following are some of the treatments for this sickness:

  1. Over-the-counter stool softeners

Stool softeners are advisable so as to help the stool pass through the anal easily. This will lessen the effort exerted and the irritation in the anal canal during bowel movement.

  1. Laxatives

Laxatives work very much like stool softeners. However, aside from softening the stool, it also increases bowel movement. Laxatives are often used to prevent constipation.

  1. Pain killers

Pain killers come in handy to ease the pain felt around the anal area. The most common pain killers prescribed by physicians are ibuprofen and paracetamol. Aside from that, topical anaesthetics may also be recommended.

  1. Botulinum toxin injections

Botulinum toxin injections, most commonly known as botox, can also be injected into the area. It promotes the healing of the area and also reduces the pain. The effect of this injection last around two to three months which is also the same time it takes for the fissures to heal.

Home Remedies              

Aside from the aforementioned treatments, you can also resort to home remedies. The following are some home remedies to treat this sickness:

  1. Rosemary and honey

A mixture of rosemary and honey is a good way to treat anal fissure. Rosemary not only tastes good, but it is also a good antimicrobial agent. Honey, on the other hand, is rich in antioxidants and also has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties.

Before using the rosemary and honey mixture, soak your rectal area in warm water. Pat it dry. Carefully dab the mixture over the rectal area using your hand or with a cotton ball.

  1. Olive Oil

Over the past few years, scientists have discovered the healing properties of olive oil. It is used to prevent cancer, stroke and type 2 diabetes. It also helps in treating inflammations such as inflamed anal and rectal area.

Like in the rosemary and honey mixture, first soak your rectal area in warm water before applying olive oil to the inflamed area.

  1. Beeswax

Beeswax, like honey is also a good way to treat this sickness. Simply apply the beeswax over the inflamed area after bathing in warm water.

  1. Baking Soda

Bathing in warm water with baking soda is also a home remedy. Baking soda is a known substance great for cleaning surfaces. When mixed with water, it can be used to clean the floors, walls, kitchen counters and toilet bowls. It is also great in cleaning the face and even in whitening the teeth.
