Anal fissures, which are ruptures or cracks in the anal canal, can be usually treated without surgery. You can do it by changing your lifestyle. Eating high fiber foods and increasing fluid intake are helpful in improving your bowel movement. A fissure can also be healed with the help of home remedies. One can apply oils such as coconut or tea tree to the affected area to speed up the healing process.  Taking a hot sitz bath and the use of over-the-counter ointments or creams can also be done to improve one’s condition.

If a person has a fissure and he wants to ensure that it will heal fast, it is recommended to stop your vices at the moment. Make sure you quit smoking weed or cigarettes and cut down on the alcohol so that you could also prevent possible health problems that might occur.

Anal fissures can be chronic or acute. The acute ones are usually short-term and can heal within a few weeks. Chronic cracks, on the other hand, can last for 8 or more weeks. Having this condition is literally a pain in the ass. If one has a fissure, he would experience extreme pain during and after a bowel movement. Anal bleeding and itching will also occur. Sometimes, there will also be a smelly discharge reminiscent of bacterial vaginosis.

If one has tried a lot of non-surgical means to treat a fissure but it still doesn’t heal yet, then it’s time to pay your doctor a visit. A doctor may perform a rectal examinations to figure out your condition. In some cases, surgical operations are performed to heal a fissure that cannot be treated by non-surgical options. Lateral internal sphincterotomy is one example of an operation that can be done to treat a chronic anal fissure.

For the said procedure, an incision is made in the internal anal sphincter. It is done to reduce the chances of recurrence and lower the resting pressure of the sphincter. This minor operation is commonly performed under a general or local anesthesia. Once it is done, it will improve blood supply that would be helpful in healing a fissure.

Lateral internal sphincterotomy can be performed either in a closed or an open technique. Both methods make an incision in the intersphincteric groove. For the open technique, the internal sphincter is separated from the mucosa and is later divided with the help of scissors. In closed sphincterotomy, an incision is also made at the intersphincteric groove. In this technique, a scalpel is inserted to the sphincter and is rotated and used to divided the muscle.

Once you’re done with this operation, it can take 6 weeks before your anus is completely healed but one can return to his regular activity after 1-2 weeks. Lateral internal sphincterotomy is actually seen as effective in treating anal fissures compared to creams but some studies suggest that this procedure has some side effects. There are cases of fecal incontinence after surgery.

If you want to ensure proper fissure healing, it is recommended to follow your doctor’s advice and take the prescribed medicines as how they are directed.
